For many years now, the Internet has been infested with a huge amount of “malware” (viruses, worms, and other Trojan horses designed to hack your private data, flood you with unwanted advertising, or simply scam you). It is therefore recommended that you remain very cautious when visiting websites or receiving emails, and that you avoid downloading unknown files and applications at all costs.
Anti-virus software publishers offer solutions to secure your computer by preventing suspicious programs from running.
Microsoft and Apple have integrated antivirus software into their respective operating systems, Windows and macOS. This raises the question of whether it is useful to install additional antivirus software on your computer.
The online magazine MacWorld investigated this issue and tested the effectiveness of the antivirus software built into macOS. Its conclusion is that this antivirus software effectively detects the hundred or so pieces of malware deliberately installed on a Mac during a test, meaning that third-party software does not offer any significant added value (article).
What about Windows? Here too, studies have shown that the security measures offered by Microsoft are sufficient for standard PC use. However, some third-party antivirus software offers additional features (such as monitoring of incoming emails or a VPN) that may be useful.
In summary, Macs and PCs are generally well protected against malware, provided that their users follow standard security rules. On PCs, however, third-party antivirus software can provide added value.
